Why were you out of Triathlon for a while?
I fell away from triathlon in late 2010 to end of 2011 for a mixture of reasons. Firstly I had a run of injuries where I would be building up to an ironman, have all my flights and accommodation booked, 10 weeks of training in and then a major injury would pop up, and this happened on five occasions, so frustration definitely got the better of me. Also the whole support thing as well, I have had to fund everything I do, and combining that with university it all became a bit much.
Did you have doubts about coming back?
Never really any doubts about coming back, but I wanted to make sure it was for the right reasons. Weather I turn professional again we will have to wait and see, I am really enjoying the more relaxed feeling as an age grouper but must admit I miss that feeling of being at the front of the race. Will wait until the end of the year to decide this one.
How has your training been going for the Hawaii?
Training for Hawaii has been pretty good this year, last year I got to 5 weeks out and it was game over with injury, so far so good. I have a select few guys that I train with in all 3 disciplines and it’s been enjoyable to have a laugh along the way. Swimming has definitely gotten a lot stronger thanks to the lads I’m swimming with at Palmy. Form and fitness is on track for a great day over there.
Have you changed your preparation from previous Ironman’s?
I wouldn’t say I have changed my preparation for the ironman this time compared to others, but I have approached things a little different, i.e. overall structure of long sessions has been better instead of just bashing out 200k. I have had some great guys pulling me along in the pool, (Dean, James and Bushy) from palmy, great crew to train with. My number 1 bad habit for many years was my nutrition; my bottles were always filled with cordial so by having hammer products to trial and use it has been a lot easier to manage hydration and recovery.
Hammer products are genuinely awesome. Very easy to ingest and I definitely notice a difference in my training and overall mood throughout the day after training. If I have my recoverite post training and plenty of fluids I feel fantastic. Took me a while to get use to the perpetuem, but I wouldn’t leave home without now.
My combination of choice for long sessions
Bottle of heed and perpetuem, apple cinnamon gels, and few electrolyte tabs and recoverite for recovery. Happy days.
