What category does it best fall under (pre-/mid-/post- race and training):
Perpetuem's primary use is during training sessions and races up to and exceeding the two to three-hour mark, when a carbohydrate/protein combination is a more appropriate primary fuel than a carbohydrate-only fuel. Perpetuem may also be used as a pre-workout meal.
Main benefits of consuming product:
Perpetuem is a complete fuel and fulfills all energy requirements for any and all long distance efforts. It may be used as the sole fuel from beginning to end or as the primary fuel during extended workouts or races. Perpetuem contains 75% carbohydrates (from long-chain maltodextrins-no added simple sugars), 13% fatty acids from a specially made long-chain lyso-lecithin, and nearly 10% soy protein. A small portion of fat seems to cue your body to more liberally release its fatty acids stores, which account for up to 70% of one's energy requirements in long bouts of exercise. A little fat in the fuel also slightly slows the rate of digestion and thus promotes "caloric satisfaction," another attractive plus during primarily long distance events. The amount of protein contained in each serving of Perpetuem satisfies the body's 5-15% protein-derived energy requirements, which helps prevent the cannibalization of lean muscle tissue. In addition, Perpetuem provides ChromeMateT brand chromium polynicotinate for stabilizing blood glucose levels, and a potent lactic acid buffering combination of sodium tribasic phosphate and l-carnosine.
How is it used:
Mix Perpetuem with water in a bottle and in varying levels of concentration, depending on the athlete's preference. During half or full iron-distance events, Perpetuem is the ideal fuel to use during the bike portion. For that purpose, the best way to use Perpetuem - both logistically and in terms of saving precious time -is to make concentrated, multi-hour bottles of the product. This is by far the most convenient method of fueling, both for long training sessions and races, because it allows the athlete to be self-contained for many hours, requiring only additional plain water along the way.
The only limitation is how many scoops the athlete wants to fit into a bottle. First, the athlete should determine their proper hourly intake in scoops by experimenting with the numbers from the dosage chart below. For example, let's say the athlete has determined through testing that two scoops of Perpetuem per hour is their ideal caloric intake and they need a 6-hour fuel supply for the bike portion of a full iron-distance event. All energy requirements for the bike portion can be fulfilled in just two bottles simply by mixing six scoops of Perpetuem with water in each bottle.
To make these concentrated bottles of fuel it will be necessary to add a few scoops at a time to get it all to mix well. Consume this concentrated mixture by taking small sips every 15-20 minutes, over the course of three hours. Keep in mind that in this concentration and over the course of three hours, the water in the mixed bottles is minimal and does not contribute to hourly fluid intake needs. To meet fluid requirements, carry a third bottle of plain water, or use a hydration system filled with water.
When should it be consumed:
During workouts and races beyond 2-3 hours Perpetuem may be as the sole fuel from beginning to end. Or it may be used as the primary fuel (fulfilling approximately two-thirds of energy requirements) with Hammer Gel or HEED (both of which are perfectly compatible with Perpetuem) used occasionally, to provide a variety of quality fuel choices
How much should a triathlete take:
Suggested use based on body weight: *
- Up to 54 kg: 1 scoop/hour
- 54 - 70 kg: 1 - 1.5 scoops/hour
- 70 - 86 kg: 2 scoops/hour
- 86+ kg: 2.25 - 2.5 scoops/hour
*These are estimated doses. Each athlete should determine in training, under a variety of conditions, their personal optimum.
