Shane Johnson – Triathlete
Shane was a professional triathlete in the early 1990’s, representing Australia at the World Championships in both Triathlon and Duathlon on 6 occasions. He retired in 1994 and works full time as a Police Officer in Adelaide, South Australia.
A comeback to the sport in 2004 netted a 17th at Ironman Australia and he continues to race and achieve exceptional results. Shane has raced in over 300 Triathlons over the past 20 years.
1. What are your sporting aspirations?
To challenge myself and be a role model for my kids.
2. Who is your sporting hero?
Dave Scott – yes I also used to wash my cottage cheese (Dave Scotts legacy), it is the secret to him looking so young.
3. What is your favourite race? Why?
Sam White Memorial Triathlon – local race in South Australia. Was one of my first triathlons I won in 1989 and then I won the race again 20 years later in 2009. Race is in memory of a local triathlete who organised races in the late 1980’s and was an inspiration to me as a junior at the time
4. What is your greatest sporting achievement?
Probably 7th in the 1992 World Duathlon Championships in Germany and first Australian, then backing it up with a 26th in the 1992 World Triathlon Championships and 3rd Australian. I don’t think anyone did the double that year.
5. What Hammer Nutrition products do you use?
Recoverite, after just about every session, perpetuem on all my long workouts and heed for everything else. Red Zone bars are a hit too. I can thank Enduralytes for my ironman result, without them I would have been a cramping mess still sitting somewhere on the course.
6. Why do you Hammer Nutrition?
Hammer products meet my every need, I would not be able to train and compete without them. I work in excess of 50 hours a week, have a wife who also works full time and also trains and races triathlons. My children Brooke 11 and Alec 8 are both into swimming and cross country as well, so we are very busy. My Hammer products are essential for recovery as I need to make sure every session counts.
7. Favourite Quote:
Easy one, “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” classic Steve Prefontaine.
