Daniel Thompson – Triathlete

I have been using hammer gels both before and during my running and triathlon races in recent seasons.

I take a tropical hammer gel about 15 minutes prior to the event, using the caffeine to build my mental alertness just prior to the start. The gel is easily digestible and doesn’t sit heavily in my stomach, which is essential particularly for races of shorter duration, where you need to have a good pace from the off.

Once on the run I use hammer gels mixing between caffeinated and standard hammer gels every thirty minutes to keep up my energy levels until the finish.

1. What are your sporting aspirations?
To improve as an athlete and race competitively in the overall standings of national races. My short term goal is to get my ironman PB under 9 hours.

2. Who is your sporting hero?
Stuart Pearce ‘Psycho’, for those not into football, he was the Nottingham Forest captain and played for England for years. He also missed a penalty, which contributed to us getting knocked out of the World Cup in 1990, for which he has not been forgiven by some. As a little lad he was inspirational as a tough no nonsense player, who gave everything each time he stepped onto the pitch.

3. What is your favourite race? Why?
I love a scenic race, with some off road elements on the run and a few hills, which can be tough to find in long course triathlon, although based on reports Challenge Wanaka or IM Lanzarote have a few of these ingredients and are on the cards at some stage. To date one of my favorite races has been the Cairns Half due to the scenic bike ride and great crowd support along the Esplanade.

4. What is your greatest sporting achievement?
Getting through Commando Training in the Royal Marines, which pushed me far harder physically and mentally than anything else I’ve done.

5. What Hammer Nutrition products do you use?
Getting through Commando Training in the Royal Marines, which pushed me far harder physically and mentally than anything else I’ve done.

6. Why do you Hammer Nutrition?
