Hammering Home - The Geelong Half Race Report
Fluid Movements - Hammer Team at Geelong 70.3 TriathlonWe arrived early at the Melbourne Triathlon Club tent on race morning to a beautiful day at sunny Geelong.
That is me, Sean Foster, and fellow Hammer Nutrition team stars, Andrew Downie (with enormous sideburns in tow) and the ever smiling Kristy Hallett.

We went about our business prepping our bikes and making sure everything was set for a great race.
Geelong had turned on a great day, with the sun breaking through the horizon as we headed for the swim start.
The swim felt long, and it appeared to be a slower course than normal. On the first turn, the sun was directly in our eyes and it was difficult to see the next buoy.
No Beg Pardons!Being a mass start with no beg your pardons, 1200 or so athletes seemingly fought for one tiny line around the Corio Bay course.
This was a fact not lost on Kristy, who was heard to say it felt more congested than Myer's Boxing Day sale out there!
We all came out in good shape: I came out of the swim just behind
fellow Hammer athlete Campbell Maffett in the first pack, Andrew was looking to make up time as he hauled his physically imposing body from the water, and Kristy also had a strong swim.
Exiting transition, it was time to settle into the ride and fuel up - Hammer time!
Perpetuem Helps Perpetual Motion!
We were all packing
Perpetuem, Hammers Endurance fuel, in our bidons as we hit the open road along Portarlington Rd.
The bike was smooth and quick, although at times it was hard to tell which direction the wind was going.
It was a 3 lap course on the bike, with a loop back through the botanical gardens and past transition.
I rode a bike time of 2:26, Andrew gaining in 2:25 and Kristy a solid 3:00hr split.
We were all itching to hit the run, which was supposedly quite challenging - Kristy was licking her lips at the prospect with running definitely being her strength.
Energy Zapping HillsThe run course lived up to our expectations with some energy zapping hills that meandered through the Botanical Gardens.
We used Hammer Endurolytes and flasks of Hammer Gel to keep the energy levels up throughout the half marathon.
Following the hilly botanic gardens section each time on the 3 lap course, we were pumped as we ran past our support team from
Fluid Movements and the
Melbourne Triathlon Club near transition.
Huge Boost On Every LoopFriends and family were cheering us on and this was a huge boost on every loop - thanks guys, you are awesome.
Keep up the great work!
- I finished in a time of 4:18, winning the 35-39age group,
- Andrew powered to the line in 4:26, and
- Kristy finished full of running in a time of 5:15hrs.
Ironman Port Macquarie, here we come!

Hammer Works - Steve's Advice In Action

Steve Born's (left) seminars always attract a loyal following - after all, this is a guy who truly speaks from a position of authority.
The following is typical of the feedback we receive:"After several years of declining performance and results in triathlons, I finally decided to look at changing a few areas - including the nutrition aspects of my training and racing.
As well as the information you provided, it also gave me new ideas and approaches to my nutrition strategy.
Following this I altered my nutrition and changed my training/racing electrolyte drink to Heed.
Turned The Clock Back 9 Years
..... last Sunday I managed to turn the clock back 9 years.
I finished only 5 seconds outside my best overall Half Ironman Triathlon time from 6 years ago.
This included a run leg that was a massive 5 mins quicker than my previous best run leg which was achieved 9 years ago.
Both of these improvements on Sunday were on a much harder course.
That information, combined with the Hammer Heed and a few other changes to my training and racing strategy, have turned my triathlon results around."Dennis Rafferty

Triathlon Training Tips
Triathlon is one of the toughest sports to train for, there's no question about it.
Triathlon training requires such a balance of stamina, speed and disciplines that the time and effort required to be really good at the sport is beyond most people.
A Truly Individual SportBut those who tackle their triathlon training with dedication and gusto are rewarded with the enjoyment of a truly individual sport where it is essentially a race against yourself.
We'll provide a few different triathlon tips that will hopefully make a difference:
Firstly, this short (2 min 45 sec) video of Steve Born giving great information about
long duration exercise (which triathlon almost always are):
Check that out for the start on this series of triathlon training tips.
Cheers

Why You Shouldn't Do What You Think You Should
Here's a quick taste of Steve discussing
what you should eat the 3 hours before a race (the video is a bit jumpy at the start - it was right when we were readjusting after changing tapes).

About David
About DavidFirstly, thanks for visiting the new look web site. We've been working hard at making it better for everyone who comes along - hope you find something of interest. As the distributor for Hammer Gel products here in Australia I thought I'd better start off by telling you a bit about us.
Business MeI was the original distributor for PowerBar in Australia for 9 years and started a fair bit of the popularity of sports foods today.
Since moving on from this a few years back, I started some research and found that sports nutrition product development had not been improving since the late 1980's and early 1990's.
Researching the world wide market led me to
Hammer Nutrition, which I'm very happy to describe as the most innovative, pure endurance sports nutrition company in the market.
I met with the founder of Hammer,
Brian Frank, and found Brian shared much of the same ideas that convinced me that Hammer has a real market in Australia.
Why Hammer NutritionWhat I'm most proud of with Hammer Nutrition is the focus on the athlete's needs and not what the manufacturer wants to make.
There are no added sugars, colourings, preservatives, gluten or anything unhealthy.
It's often about what you don't put in that makes all the difference. The only ingredients used in Hammer products, are specifically related to ensuring the athlete is able to perform at their peak. That's what we're about.
No hype. Just great products:
- We sell extremely effective products.
- We provide caring customer service.
- We support our customers with heaps of free knowledge and advice.
The great success we've had in such a short period of time is terrific testament to their quality. We don't have the multi-million marketing budgets of some, but what we do have are superb products for endurance athletes and very happy customers.
The offices are based in Burleigh Heads here on the Gold Coast. I don't want to be cruel to our many visitors from colder climates (!), but we're about 3 minutes away from this view:
Thanks For ReadingThanks for reading this far. Appreciate your interest and I'd be delighted if you'd be keen to give our products a try - I guarantee that they're simply fantastic and something I'm very proud to be involved in.
Regards
David
