Legendary Ride Create 3 Legends

Okay, okay - all you guys who think you're legends, listen up.

We have some real legends in our midst!

Chris Fryer, Brian Scarborough and Malcolm Robertson completed the Legends Ride last Saturday.

The Legends relax

The lads used Perpetuem as their main fuel, with selective use of Hammer Gels.

Here's How You Become A Legend

The Legends Victor Harbor Ride follows the Heysen Trail and alternate roads from Mylor to Victor Harbor and back.

It includes Myponga Conservation Park through which bikes cannot be ridden, so 2 x 40min-1hr hike a bike.

Ride profile - Click to make it larger

Total distance is 230km.

Only 3 other riders achieved have ever achieved Legend status 1 years ago:
  • Mick Tagell
  • Andrew Nicholson
  • Dave Martini.
Legend has it that they started from Mylor on a Sat at 5am and despite getting lost on the way back finished at 2am the next morning.

The Rules For Becoming A Legend

1. The route must be completed by riders wanting to become a Legend.

2. Wannabe Legends must declare themselves prior to the start.

Only Wannabes of similar potential ability will be accepted, as the best chance of success lies with a group covering the route together.

3. Wannabes as a group will set the ride pace equal to the slowest.

All Wannabes will assist other Wannabes to complete the route until such time as a Wannabe withdraws.

4. All riders must have their own phone a friend plan

5. All riders need to cater for themselves with the usual lights, spares, nutrition etc, although other riders will always assist in an emergency

6. Witnesses may join in for any sections but must be self sufficient for everything including having a map and/or knowing the route, and accept that the above pace will apply

2009 Ride Statistics
  • Start 5am and finish 11:27 pm = 18 hours 26 min 41 secs (includes all stops)
  • 229.2 kms
  • 4300m climbing
  • Track was rated as Dead ie bottom bracket deep puddles, boggy, muddy, cow shit etc
  • No rain but overcast. Slight south-westerly breeze.
To put that sort of ride into perspective, I spoke with our across Australia cycling champ Jack Sinclair.

Jack's biggest day was 260 km and he said it was dead flat with a very stiff breeze at his back. He took 12 hours to do that.

So this ride truly is legendary!

Cheers

David
